FUSE Glass Artist Residency 2023
Marcel Hoogstad Hay
South Australian artist Marcel Hoogstad Hay was the 2023 recipient of the FUSE Glass Artist Residency.
Hoogstad Hay has spent the last 10 years working with glass. He graduated with Honours from the ANU School of Art and Design in Canberra in 2012, completed the Associate Program at JamFactory in 2014 and has worked as Teaching Assistant and Studio Assistant for established artists and studios.
Hoogstad Hay was chosen by a panel of three judges – renowned South Australian glass artist Clare Belfrage, Head of JamFactory’s Glass Studio Kristel Britcher and Carrick Hill Board Member and widely acclaimed ceramic artist Jeff Mincham.
The judges were impressed with the trajectory of Hoogstad Hay’s practice to date and his recent innovative experimentation in combining mirrored glass with traditional Venetian cane techniques. His sculptural works draw inspiration from the fields of astrophysics and quantum mechanics and he has been steadfastly committed to refining his glassblowing skills. As an early mid-career artist, the judges believed he was ideally placed to benefit substantially from the opportunities afforded by this important residency.
