ORIGINS OF THE PRIZE

Since it was established in 2016, the FUSE Glass Prize has become the most prestigious platform for celebrating and supporting outstanding glass artists from Australian and New Zealand. The prize evolved from conversations that began in 2014 between passionate glass art supporters and collectors Jim and Helen Carreker and JamFactory, following the conclusion of the Ranamok Glass Prize, which shone a light on glass artists from the region for 20 years.

The FUSE Glass Prize was launched in 2016 through founding donors Jim and Helen Carreker, along with Diana Laidlaw AM, Phil and Diana Jaquillard, Alan and Sue Young, the Thomas Foundation and Sandy Benjamin OAM. 

The prize continues to be predominately funded through private philanthropy and sponsorship with ongoing support from the Carrekers alongside Pamela Wall OAM and Ian Wall AM (1931-2022), David McKee AO and Pam McKee, the Hon Diana Laidlaw AM, Susan Armitage, Sonia Laidlaw, Trina Ross, Maia Ambegaokar and Joshua Bishop.

PRIZE DETAILS

This biennial non-acquisitive prize for Australian and New Zealand glass artists is Australasia’s richest prize for glass. It provides a platform for artists to push themselves and their work to new limits and focuses public attention on the importance of glass as a medium for contemporary artistic expression.

18 Finalists (12 Established Artists and 6 Emerging Artists) will be selected as part of an exhibition at JamFactory, Adelaide before touring to the ANU School of Art & Design Gallery, Canberra and Australian Design Centre, Sydney.

The major prize is a juried, non-acquisitive, AU$20,000 cash prize for established artists.

The David Henshall Emerging Artist Prize, valued at AU$10,000 is awarded to an emerging artist and includes AU$5,000 cash and a professional development opportunity at JamFactory valued at AU$5,000

For almost 50 years JamFactory has been presenting outstanding exhibitions and public programs and nurturing the careers of talented artists, craftspeople and designers. A unique not-for-profit organisation located in the Adelaide city centre and Seppeltsfield in the Barossa, JamFactory is supported by the South Australian Government and recognised nationally as a centre of excellence.

JamFactory’s Glass Studio is the longest running hot glass facility in Australia and one of the largest and best equipped studios in the Southern Hemisphere. Associates and staff guided by Head of Studio Kristel Britcher work together to design and make corporate awards and gifts, custom one-off commissions, architectural work and small production runs.
