JamFactory
and presenting partner Carrick Hill are thrilled to announce the recipient of the 2023 FUSE Glass Artist Residency.

Awarded biennially in alternate years to the prestigious FUSE Glass Prize, the FUSE Glass Artist Residency aims to create significant opportunities for mid-career artists working in glass in Australia and New Zealand.

JamFactory is delighted to announce South Australian based artist Marcel Hoogstad Hay as the 2023 recipient.

The residency, valued at more than $20,000, will enable Hoogstad Hay to work with skilled assistants, take risks and experiment with the development of new work using hot blown glass. The Residency, which includes accommodation, studio space, paid glassblowing assistants and living expenses, will run for 4 weeks at JamFactory in Adelaide between March and August 2023.

A further outcome of the Residency will be a solo exhibition at Carrick Hill – the iconic South Australian historic house museum and garden in Springfield.

Hoogstad Hay has spent the last 10 years working with glass. He graduated with Honours from the ANU School of Art and Design in Canberra in 2012, completed the Associate Program at JamFactory in 2014 and has worked as Teaching Assistant and Studio Assistant for established artists and studios.

Hoogstad Hay was chosen by a panel of three judges – renowned South Australian glass artist Clare Belfrage, Head of JamFactory’s Glass Studio Kristel Britcher and Carrick Hill Board Member and widely acclaimed ceramic artist Jeff Mincham.

The judges were impressed with the trajectory of Hoogstad Hay’s practice to date and his recent innovative experimentation in combining mirrored glass with traditional Venetian cane techniques. His sculptural works draw inspiration from the fields of astrophysics and quantum mechanics and he has been steadfastly committed to refining his glassblowing skills. As an early mid-career artist, the judges believed he was ideally placed to benefit substantially from the opportunities afforded by this important residency.
